Rujealyn R. Cancino, a Master Teacher II with specialization in English/Science subjects, is among the four elementary teachers in the country named by the Metrobank Foundation to have exemplified the qualifications of an outstanding teacher.

A teacher for 21 years, Cancino is the 2nd Awardee from Pangasinan, 1st from Lingayen and 1st from the Lingayen I Central School in Lingayen.

The other winners in the Elementary Competition are: Winona Diola of De La Salle Santiago Zobel School (Muntinlupa City); Josephine Chonie Obseñares of Butuan City SPED Center (Butuan City, Agusan del Norte); and Arnol Rosales of Francisco Melgar Memorial School (Naujan, Oriental Mindoro).

“At the end of the day, no matter what the struggles are, I tell myself that I was able to touch lives, create impact and make a difference,” said Cancino whose abilities to

teach both English and Science using creativity and innovation in engaging her students in the learning process made a difference.

As MBFI determined, Cancino would usually ask her students to engage in role-play after discussions in Science, ensuring that learners are able to understand and apply concepts in daily life. Her success extends to science fairs, where her mentees have garnered awards for their investigatory projects. She is also a winning coach at the National Schools Press Conference, an annual nationwide competition for aspiring journalists. In addition, Cancino is the adviser to their official school paper, the Sea Breeze.

She also shares her talents beyond their school. Cancino has written poems and stories in Pangasinense which are included in teacher’s guides for Region I. She is also a sought-after resource speaker for teacher trainings on science and campus journalism, especially with the adoption of the K to 12 curriculum.

Cancino is a member of her parish formation team, conducting youth encounters and other formation programs across Lingayen. She is also involved in the conduct of Pamaskong Handog Para sa mga Bata, an annual feeding program that brings Christmas cheer to indigent children.

A 2009 Outstanding Teacher for the Lingayen I District, Ms. Cancino was recently honoured as 2015 Outstanding Public School Teacher by the Rotary Club International District 3790. She received a Bachelor of Elementary Education degree from the University of Luzon in Dagupan City and Master of Arts in Language Education from the University of the Philippines-Diliman.

MBFI president Aniceto Sobrepeña congratulated the winners, saying that, “Teachers are the backbone of nation-building efforts. Through their use of effective teaching strategies and their involvement in community projects outside the classroom, they are able to mold the next generation of Filipinos to work for social progress.”

The 10 Outstanding Teachers will be presented together with the 2016 awardees of the Country’s Outstanding Police Officers in Service (COPS) and The Outstanding Philippine Soldiers (TOPS) — collectively known as the Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos — in a formal awarding ceremony on September 5, 2016 as part of Metrobank’s 54th anniversary celebration.
